Unusual Barn Door Plans

Barn door plans are available in four common types, and each one works a little different. Three of these types of door open upwards, and one opens sideways. The doors that open upwards are called up-and-over, section and roller doors. The door that opens laterally is called a swing-hung door. If you’re a do-it-yourself guy, you can install these doors on your own, but you’ll need the help of a strong friend, as some of them are very heavy.

How Doors Work

Up and over barn door plans require a lot of space in front of the garage. The door swings straight out and up, then runs along a track into the top of the garage. This is a disadvantage for homeowners who do not have a very long driveway. But if you are looking for a good and safe door, this should be at the top of the list. This type of door is always connected to an automatic garage door opener. The section gate is the most popular type, as it is inexpensive and can be easily installed.

You can install one section at a time, making the door much easier. You can also buy them already put together. This barn door slides up a groove that runs from the floor to a rounded corner at the top, then continues into the top of the garage. Since the door is in sections, there is no need for it to come out in front of the garage; thus, you can pull right up to it when you open it. You can open the door manually or with an automatic opener. Roller doors were made to take up minimal space in the garage when it opened, and no space on the outside.
